Notes: The L was the principal post-war steam freight design and was used virtually throughout the system. It was initially classified P (Pobeda- victory) but was reclassified as L in 1947 in honour of its Kolomna designer, L.S. Lebedyanskii - hence its nickname, Lebedyanka. The design was changed slightly in 1947 and again in 1952, affecting the weight and dimensions. Special features included a mechanical stoker, and several dozen early examples were equipped with Vanderbilt-type tenders. They were well regarded by crews, but were soon overtaken by the process of traction modernisation. Thus, only 2313 were regularly active in January 1967, and this number decreased steadily to 472 in 1977 and 127 in 1987. However, very few were scrapped and there were still 4109 in stock in 1987, forming, together with the Er class , the bulk of the steam reserve. Mass withdrawals began in 1987-88.
